TBM-2009.15 – From the Logs of Basil

Robot head looking front on camera isolated on a black background

Description:

#audio. #flashfiction #basilandzoe A look at one or two of Basil’s log files.

Excerpt:

The Cousteau has just completed a humanitarian mission to the planet we refer to as Aquaria  Three, though the native population – a race of sentient marine mammals not far removed from the Terran cetacean species – has a different name for their world. The organic beings among our crew have been unable to reproduce the name, but I have managed a close approximation that the locals told me was ‘close enough for krill.’

Description:

#Audio. #flashfiction #covidsmetamorphosis When your partner is a synthetic lifeform, family planning takes on a whole new dimension.

Excerpt:

We lost a son,” I corrected. And we had, two years before Elizabeth was born. Our son, Jake, had been stillborn. There had been no discernible cause. Sometimes, even with all the technology of many, many worlds, horrible things just… happened. “We are not building a replacement.”

Robot head looking front on camera isolated on a black background

Description:

#Audio. #flashfic #BasilandZoe A cheerful story about (the little) death.

Excerpt:

“I was aware you had… become somewhat absent… but inducing a physical response is not the be-all and end-all of sex, Zoe, even for a synthetic lifeform like myself.” His tone softened. “I wish to know if you were – are – emotionally satisfied as well.”

1908.21 – DDOP.21 – Switching Gears

Robot head looking front on camera isolated on a black background

Description:

#Audio. #Flashfic.  #BasilandZoe A relationship switches gears.

Excerpt:

Basil,” I made his name into something like an admonishment. “You’re my friend, too, aren’t you? I wouldn’t have invited you if I didn’t want you there.” I moved closer to the tiny bench he was occupying. “Move over a little.”

He did as I asked, making room for me. “I had planned to contact you once I had returned to my quarters. I came here to determine what I wished to say.”

“Well, ‘Happy Birthday’ is the typically used phrase, but if you had something more original, I’m sure I wouldn’t object.” I could tell he meant something more. I was keeping my tone light on purpose.

jellyfish

Description:

#Audio. #Flashfic.  Incorporate and anecdote into a story. #BasilandZoe #origin

Excerpt:

“Thank you, Zoe, I accept your invitation.” He joined me on the bench and we were quiet for several minutes but then he broke the silence. “Were you aware, that the term ‘jellyfish’ is not accurate?”

“I’m not sure what you mean?”

“These creatures are neither jelly nor technically fish. Rather they are varieties of the phylum Cnidaria which includes the ‘true jellies’ but even those are not fish. In fact the word ‘jellyfish’ actually proves this.”
